How to Register a Birth |
Registering
the birth of your child is a legal requirement.
If your child’s birth is not registered you will be unable to obtain
a birth certificate for that child. Birth certificates are required
for school, university, National Insurance, National registration etc. |
How much time do I have to register
a birth?
A birth must be registered within twenty-eight (28) days after birth.

What Births must be registered?
- If a child is born in Barbados, whether alive of Stillborn, the
birth must be registered.
- The Registrar may also register a birth that occurred on an aircraft
or ship traveling to Barbados in certain circumstances.

Who can register a birth?
- The parents of a child are responsible for having the child’s
birth registered.
- If the parents are married to each other the father registers the
birth.
- If the parents are not married to each other the mother registers
the birth.
- If the parents are not married to each other and the father acknowledges
paternity and is desirous of having his name entered on the birth
record both parents must be present at the registration of the birth

| What is a Stillbirth?
A Stillbirth is any child that has been removed from its mother and
does not breathe or show any signs of life.
Who should register a Stillbirth and what is
required
- Where the parents are not married the mother registers the Stillbirth.
- Where the parents are married the father registers the Still- Birth.
- Where the mother and the father are not available - the Funeral
Director in charge of the body registers the Stillbirth.
The following documents are required:
- A Medical Certificate of Stillbirth issued by the Medical Practitioner.
- A Notice of Stillbirth Card signed by the informant and the Funeral
Director.
The following information is required:
- Date of Stillbirth
- Place of Stillbirth
- Name and age of mother
- Name and age of father
- Addresses of mother and father
- Date of proposed burial of Stillbirth
- Place of burial of Stillbirth.

What to produce when registering a birth.
- A marriage certificate (where parents are married to each other).
- A valid form of identification.
- The immunization card given from the hospital.

What to do when registering a birth.
- Have the correct spelling of the names of the child.
- Answer all questions asked by the registrar.
- Carefully check and ensure that all the information given is accurate
and correct before signing.
Inaccurate information may cause problems at a later date. Furthermore
fees may be payable for corrections to the register. |
The Vital Statistics Registration Act Cap 191A
of the Laws of Barbados provides penalties for failing to have your
child’s birth registered or for giving false or misleading information |
Late registration of birth.
In some cases, for whatever reason, some people find that their birth
was never registered by their parents. There is provision to register
a late birth.
The parent/guardian:
- Complete and sign a declaration, which is obtained from the Registration
Department.
- In some instances you may be required to obtain a letter from the
institution where you were born as proof of you date and place of
birth.
- Payment of a late fee is required.
